Frequently asked questions
What is a Birth Doula?
Birth Doulas offer physical and emotional support as well as evidence based information and advocacy during pregnancy, labour and delivery. This can include resources for families to make informed decisions about their births, position ideas and comfort measures in labour and assistance in navigating the sometimes overwhelming emotions that come with welcoming a new baby.
What is a Postpartum Doula?
Postpartum doulas offer emotional and practical support as well as evidence based information and encouragement for families in the "Fourth Trimester" (the first 12 weeks after baby's birth). This can include active listening about the birth story and the emotions tied to it, assistance with soothing, bathing and feeding the new baby or even doing some dishes and light housework. Studies show that having the support of a postpartum doula can help reduce postpartum mood disorders.
Does a doula replace my husband or partner?
It is exactly the opposite of that, a doula's role is to assist you and your partner in maneuvering through these experiences together. Practical support, such as allowing a partner to take a break to eat or rest during labour or showing them how to bathe their newborn can be so impactful in their feeling confident and involved. This is just a small example of how a doula can ensure you both feel connected and empowered together.
I'm having a baby alone, can a doula be my support person?
If you're having a baby alone, a doula can absolutely be an invaluable support to you. A dual certified doula, who can offer both birth and postpartum services, would be best suited to see you through the entire experience and offer the greatest continuity in care.
When should I interview doulas?
You can begin interviewing doulas at any time. The interview is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. It usually takes about one hour while we both ask questions and talk about your needs and my services. It's important to interview more than one doula if you can because you may feel a more comfortable connection with one doula compared to another. It's a great idea to prepare a list of questions and make notes about each of the doulas responses.
How much can I expect to pay for a doula?
Fees can vary from doula to doula and they also depend on what kind of support you need. In order to determine a fee it's necessary to meet and discuss your needs. Conducting interviews with multiple doulas will help to give you a better idea of what is available in your area and the similarities and differences between each individual doula and their offered services. Please contact me directly to discuss your needs and what kinds of packages and pricing are currently available as they're subject to change.
Is it possible to hire a doula for a friend or family member?
Absolutely. Hiring a doula for a friend or family member is a great idea when you want to give someone the gift of meaningful, practical, thoughtful support. This is especially popular for families who live in different cities and aren't able to connect in person during birth or the postpartum period. If you would like to hire me, please contact me directly to coordinate things. I offer a full Postpartum Care Package or there's also a Breastfeeding Support Package which is strictly focused on breastfeeding success.
